Congratulations on making it to the final stage of your ADI journey! ADI Part 3 is where you’ll demonstrate your ability to teach learner drivers safely, effectively, and in line with DVSA standards. This is the most important test in your instructor training, and we’re here to make sure you pass it with confidence.
The Instructional Ability Test is a practical assessment where a DVSA examiner observes you delivering a real driving lesson with a live pupil.
You will be assessed on your ability to:
• Identify your pupil’s learning needs.
• Plan and deliver an effective lesson.
• Adapt your teaching based on how your pupil is progressing.
• Maintain control of the learning environment.
• Provide clear, safe, and client-centred instruction
• Length: Up to 45 minutes.
• Observed Lesson: A DVSA examiner will sit in the back and assess how well you teach a real student in a real lesson.
• Assessment Criteria: You’ll be graded on 17 key competencies, grouped under:
• Lesson Planning
• Risk Management
• Teaching and Learning Strategies
The examiner will score each competency from 0–3. You need a minimum total score of 31 out of 51, with no score of 0 in any area, to pass.
✅ 40+ Hours of In-Car and Classroom Coaching
Our DVSA-approved training includes a full 40 hours of in-car tuition, covering:

✅ Training on All 17 Competencies
We break down each of the DVSA’s 17 assessment points so you can master them one by one. We give real-life examples, scenarios, and practical demonstrations to help you understand how to apply them in every lesson.
✅ Client-Centred Learning (CCL) Approach
We show you how to become a modern, flexible instructor who puts the pupil first — exactly what the DVSA wants to see. This includes how to:
• Involve pupils in decisions
• Adapt your methods to suit the pupil
• Encourage reflective thinking
• Give meaningful, two-way feedback
✅ Mock Tests & Lesson Reviews
You’ll regularly teach live lessons while your trainer assesses and gives you structured feedback. This prepares you for the real test — and helps you spot your strengths and improve any weak points.

• Lesson Planning Templates
• Video Examples of Good Practice
• Competency Tracking Tools
• WhatsApp Support Group for Ongoing Guidance
